Realist, not conformist analysis of the latest financial, business and political news

Appeasement Redux

There are many who presume that opposition to Brexit is rooted in treason – that British MPs (including the PM and Chancellor) are just EU stooges, maneuvered into place by shadowy Establishment figures and paid for by George Soros and other globalists.

In this, Dan Hannan may be right – the EU does indeed seem to have a peculiar hold over its captives, and their hideous strength ironically seems to create a type of Stockholm Syndrome in those it holds fast. With accounts not signed off for twenty years, and George Soros financially “supporting” many MEPs, it’s difficult to avoid concluding the EU is a corrupt and authoritarian globalist project, filled with venal ex-communists and socialist ideologues, determined to have another try at creating the USSR, but this time at the heart of Europe.

But let’s assume for a moment that the hundreds of MPs and MEPs who do the EU’s bidding are not like this, nor merely grifters whose allegiance to the EU rather than their own nation has been bought with jobs and perks and cash, but are instead well-meaning “public servants”, who genuinely believe that Britain (and France, and Holland, and Ireland etc) are better off inside the EU than without.

Let us grant them the benefit of the doubt.

So they are not traitors, but merely appeasers.

Britain has seen calls from appeasers before of course – I propose that we remind ourselves who they were, what they wanted, and how they were dealt with.

Then we can perhaps examine how our modern media might have encouraged Churchill to do things differently.

Let’s begin.

It’s 1939 and Britain is at war – PM Neville Chamberlain gravely announces the news on the radio at 11:15am on September 3rd.

“This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a
final Note stating that, unless we heard from them by 11 o’clock that they were
prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would
exist between us.

I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that
consequently this country is at war with Germany.”

The headlines from our modern media next day:

“PM urged to give Germany more time”

Despite the best efforts of appeasers led by Lord Halifax, Britain decides to fight. Churchill is appointed PM on May 10th and three days later says…

“I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land, and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be.”

The headlines from our modern media next day:

“PM deeply negative comments criticised by group of reasonable MPs led by Lord Halifax”

He survives to see the British Army cornered weeks later on the northern coast of France – he says:

“We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,”

The headlines from our modern media next day:

“Churchill mocked for failure to understand modern warfare – bizarrely claims British soldiers will fight on beaches”

A fortnight later, the bulk of the British Army have been miraculously evacuated back to Britain with the help of the Little Boats – he says “…we must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations.”

The headlines from our modern media next day:

“PM criticises British Army – says “wars are not won by evacuations”.

France has fallen, and Churchill rallies the nation ahead of the Battle of Britain – he says…

“The battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned upon us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war.

If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.’”

The headlines from our modern media next day:

“PM calls science “perverted”

As the Battle of Britain rages, Churchill praises the bravery of the RAF pilots.

“The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Our modern media?

“Parents of dead RAF pilots demand Churchill resign”

The Battle of Britain is won, and in what will later be characterised as a massive military blunder, Germany turns away and marches its men and machinery into the freezing embrace of a Russian winter.

The headlines from the modern media read as follows:

“Baffling German decision saves Churchill’s bacon”

It’s December 1941 – barely six months after the Germans commence their assault on Russia with Operation Barbarossa, Japan attacks the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii and allies itself with Germany – over three thousand American personnel are killed or wounded and a third of the Pacific Fleet is destroyed or damaged.

Churchill commiserates with America and says “In the days to come the British and American peoples will for their own safety and for the good of all walk together side by side in majesty, injustice and in peace.”

Our modern media?

“Pathetic Churchill begs America for help”

America starts pouring men and materials into Britain, using the island as a staging post with a view to retaking France and pushing on to defeat Germany. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt arrives in London.

The London Mayor says “The wife of the American President is not welcome here”.

It’s June 1944 and 80,000 men from the British Second Army assault Gold, Juno and Sword – three beaches in Northern France.

Churchill had wanted to accompany the invasion forces on D-Day itself, and had to be dissuaded by the King. He would not allow the visit to be delayed much longer and arrived on the Northern Coast of France six days after the assault.

Our modern media?

“Churchill arrives late for his own invasion”

And now It’s April 1945 – the Allies have Berlin surrounded and the German leadership have retreated to a bunker in the heart of the city. Rumours abound that Germany are about to surrender.

Our modern media?

“There is still time to surrender to Germany and save lives. We must negotiate”

It’s May 1945 – the war is won. At the V-E Day celebrations Churchill says…

“My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the great British nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny. After a while we were left all alone against the most tremendous military power that has been seen. We were all alone for a whole year. The lights went out and the bombs came down. But every man, woman and child in the country had no thought of quitting the struggle. London can take it. So we came back after long months from the jaws of death, out of the mouth of hell, while all the world wondered. When shall the reputation and faith of this generation of English men and women fail? I say that in the long years to come not only will the people of this island but of the world, wherever the bird of freedom chirps in human hearts, look back to what we’ve done and they will say “do not despair, do not yield to violence and tyranny, march straightforward and die if need be-unconquered.”

Our modern media?

“A million men are dead. We demand that Churchill be tried for war crimes.”

P.S – It’s worth considering that if the men and women who fought to defend this country in World War II were somehow restored to life now and asked their opinion on the greatest threat to our way of life……..what would they point to?

“We demand that Churchill be tried for war crimes.” Well it is true that Winnie was the author of atrocities recognised as such even at the time. It is true that he was the creative spirit behind many of the greatest ballsups of WW2, Gallipolli in WW1 being merely a warm-up. Why on earth should that boozy recalcitrant get a free pass?

What would they point to – after Rotherham, tube bombings, Manchester bombings etc they might think back to Winston Churchill – “How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its… Read more »
