That’s one way we can read this story, that Ennio Morricone has just failed his hiring interview for Quentin Tarantino’s next movie. Or even that he wanted to fail it, set out to do so. Or even, given how weird Hollywood is, perhaps this is how they tell each other that they like them?
For Morricone is not exactly complimentary about Tarantino:
The ‘Hateful Eight’ composer also called the director’s films “trash.”
It seems Ennio Morricone is not a fan of Quentin Tarantino. In a recent interview with the German edition of Playboy, The Hateful Eight composer called the director a “cretin” and said his films were “trash.”
It’s unlikely that anyone’s going to call Tarantino high art. Well, unless they’re being very post modern and ironic about it. But this will probably hurt more to the auteur:
Morricone who has credits on over 500 movies, and has provided iconic scores for Sergio Leone’s “A Fistful of Dollars,” Roland Joffe’s Cannes-winning “The Mission,” and Guiseppe Tornatore’s “Cinema Paradiso,” said that Tarantino does not rank in the pantheon of great directors.
“The man is a cretin. He only steals from others and puts stuff back together again. There’s nothing original about that. That doesn’t make him a director,” Morricone alleged. “He is nothing compared with the Hollywood greats, such as John Huston, Alfred Hitchcock or Billy Wilder. They had class. Tarantino simply recooks old dishes.”
Guess when you both hit 90 and half a thousand movie credits then you have earned the right to tell it as you see it. But there is very definitely a feeling that he’s either just failed or possibly deliberately pre-empted that interview to score Tarantino’s next movie.
Are Tarantino movies ‘scored’? They strike me as jukebox musicals with extra gore.
Enno denies it now in that HR article.
I looked at the original Playboy article.. but its in Tysk, can anyone translate?
“Der Mann ist ein Kretin”
