Wait, What, Chelsea Clinton Is Responsible For The Christchurch Shootings?

An entry for the Annals of Left Wing Idiocy here. Chelsea Clinton is being accused of responsibility for the Christchurch mosque shootings. No, really, that’s the claim. And of course at one level this is entirely risible. No more than the delusions of a child woman fresh from her grievance studies course.

At another level it’s rather more worrying. Because there are, obviously enough, as a result of that massacre calls for the censorship of what we all might be allowed to say. Facebook, Twitter, must not allow people to mutter this, mumble that, because look, look! Shooting Muslims!

And therefore everyone will be banned from saying anything which offends the mores of those who have been through grievance studies school.

Chelsea Clinton has been accused by a mob of inciting the ____ attack in Christchurch. I left the blank because I’m not sure what to call this yet … “creedist” maybe.

No, really. This is what is being said:

On Friday, New York University students confronted Chelsea Clinton at a vigil for victims of the mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand, which claimed the lives of 49 people. The shooting took place at two mosques. The killer deliberately targeted Muslims, and was motivated by the delusional concerns typical of the far-right white nationalist fringe: Islam invading the West, immigrants replacing the white race, etc. If you’re wondering what this has to do with Chelsea Clinton, you’re not alone. And yet, a leftwing activist wearing a t-shirt bearing the slogans “Jobs for all, Medicare for all, college for all, and justice for all” screamed at the former president’s daughter. “This [vigil] right here is the result of a massacre stoked by people like you and the words that you put out into the world,” said the activist, a young woman. “I want you to know that and I want you to feel that deep inside—49 people died because of the rhetoric that you put out there.”

The connection being:

The backlash was in response to Clinton’s blasting of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) … “We should expect all elected officials, regardless of party, and all public figures to not traffic in anti-Semitism,” Clinton tweeted on Feb. 10. Rose Asaf, who posted the video, tweeted: “People haven’t forgotten the Islamophobic mob she incited against @IlhanMN. There is no sense of responsibility.”

That’s right. Gently suggest that a US Congresswoman not be anti-semitic – possibly so, allegedly – and you’ve caused a massacre of Muslims 10,000 miles away.

The participants in the mobs are increasingly unhinged and untethered to reality.

Quite, but what is the function of a grievance studies course if not to cause this?

And at one level this is, as above, merely risible. But the problem then becomes, well, what is going to be done about it?

The Christchurch shooting is already showing the wisdom – or cynicism – of Rahm Emanuel’s comment that you never let a crisis go to waste. Or, even, of Naomi Klein’s whine about disaster neoliberalism but somewhat in reverse. For here we’ve that appalling tragedy of some nutter going postal at two mosques and the demand is therefore that all the rest of us should and must be censored. Didn’t see that one coming, didj’ya? Except, of course, there are those who really do think that free speech for us oiks, hoi polloi, is a terrible danger to the manner the world is run. Therefore if an opportunity presents itself to curb that civil liberty then that opportunity must be taken.

Some nutter takes out half a century in a massacre. So, which of our rights and civil liberties are going to be taken as a result? The former is appalling, of course, as have been massacres of Copts at church, a more recent event in the Philippines. The latter though is what is to be properly worried about. As the aquiambler didn’t quite say, for you will always have the nutters; but you do not always have liberty and freedom.
