it would be rather interesting to see the same graph for individual countries. I suspect that it would show the same hockey-stick shape – only the blade would start to rise at different dates. My guesses would be:

India – around 1780-1800, when it was colonised by the British
Africa – around 1850, when it was colonised by the British and French
Australia – around 1790, when it was colonised by the British
Japan – around 1850, when the Americans arrived
China – around 1950, when they started to copy the West
USSR – around 1950, when they started to copy the West

….
