That both Tony Benn and his wife inherited large publishing fortunes is entirely true. That neither donated them to either the government or the cause of equality is also true. That Abigail Disney thinks rich people like her should pay more tax without her donating chunks to the government is also something we can surmise. There being that certain gap between walk and talk among those who would tell the rest of us how to live.

But Laura Murray? Labour’s new head of complaints? Or at least she was and now might not be that new head. Why should she insist that there be no bourgeoisie on her website? Because that’s what aristocrats do of course:

Why be intimidated? Laura Murray, a 30-year-old aide to the Labour leader, backs Corbyn’s plans for a wealth tax and declares “no bourgeoisie” on her Facebook page. Today it can be revealed that her family was behind the anonymous sale of one of the most expensive artworks in history, Pablo Picasso’s L’Enfant au Pigeon (Child with a Dove), which was sold for £50m in 2013. She also owns a share of a £1.3m north London property transferred to her by her mother, reportedly saving up to £500,000 in inheritance tax. Murray is the daughter of Andrew Murray, 60, a key Corbyn adviser who comes from Scottish aristocracy and whose grandfather served as the imperial governor of Madras. He left the Communist Party after 40 years in 2016.

Any observation of the British class system shows that it’s the middle that’s despised by both ends. The true toff gets along rather well with the oik as the Household Cavalry has been showing all these generations. Laura Murray and family are just the current day expression of that old truth.

It might even sound a little odd that such aristos should be in the vanguard of the socialist revolution. But who is it that will be occupying those grand houses come the day the bourgeoisie are sent the way of the kulaks? The vanguard of the socialist revolution of course. An aristo being in the vanguard just means they’ll not have to move house once the revolution does arrive.
