Scr.eu Y.eu Over Brexit As We Wave Adi.eu

Lordy Be isn’t the European Union as petty an organisation as can be? At the stroke of midnight upon Brexit day those .eu domains registered to British holders will perhaps be cancelled. So much for those delicate things like property rights, eh? People have paid real and good money to buy them but they’ll be snatched away at the bureaucrat’s whim:

…the European Commission announced it will cancel all 300,000 domains under the .eu top-level domain that have a UK registrant, following Britain’s eventual departure from the European Union.

Sadly, yes:

As of the withdrawal date, undertakings and organisations that are established in the United Kingdom but not in the EU, and natural persons who reside in the United Kingdom will no longer be eligible to register .eu domain names or, if they are .eu registrants, to renew .eu domain names registered before the withdrawal date.

They go on to point out that this can and possibly will mean overnight cancellation of those which already exist:

2. REVOCATION OF REGISTERED DOMAIN NAMES
Where, as of the withdrawal date and as a result of the withdrawal of the United
Kingdom, a holder of a domain name does no longer fulfil the general eligibility criteria
pursuant to Article 4(2)(b) of Regulation (EC) 733/2002, the Registry for .eu will be
entitled to revoke such domain name on its own initiative and without submitting the
dispute to any extrajudicial settlement of conflicts in accordance with point (b) of Article
20, first subparagraph, of Commission Regulation (EC) No 874/2004.

Yep, they can just spirit away the legal property of an individual without appeal, compensation or nuttin’.

What ghastly little oiks they are.

This is a good delineation of the difference in worldviews. We Brits, sure more breached than perfected, run the system on the idea that we build government to do collectively the things which cannot be done both voluntarily and collectively. Some things do need that whip of the State to be achieved. Over there the basic idea is rather different, the populace are just the peasantry that must be managed by the enlightened from their offices. That’s why property can be confiscated from those who aren’t the right sort of peasant.

This sort of action, in fact the mere idea of having a system which thinks this is something that must be attended to, is another reason to leave of course. Who would want to remain part of an organisation that will steal from the people?

Headline stolen from El Reg’s comment section. Of course.

  • Who (apart from the EU itself) actually uses an EU domain? No doubt multinational brands will have registered one (and, as a multinational, can retain it), just to prevent domain-squatting, but apart from that I can't see a reason why a solely UK-based operation would want one.

    • I tried to register the.eu, so I could set up fuck.the.eu and independence.from.the.eu.

For some strange reason the application was not successful.

  • Sounds like a business opportunity to me. Somebody, let's call him Tim, who lives in the EU offers himself as the nominated owner of these domain names, for a small fee of course, allowing the "real" owners to manage them as they see fit.
And he pays a small royalty to the person who suggested it. ;-)

  • Hooray! Another small decision that furthers the irreversibility of Brexit, even as Mrs May gets queasy about jumping off the "cliff." And, to boot, tarnishes the EU as a safe place to hold property, and impels British businesses to rebrand around .uk and further raise the cost of not going through with Brexit!

  • I've always thought that only eu.philes would have ever registered a .eu domain anyway so schedenfruede...hahahahahahahaha

  • the euophiles see how the eu has treated britain since the vote - with utter contempt and think to themselves - "we want more of that" Tim has in the past talked about people wanting brexit good and hard but these euophiles appear to be on another plane of self loathing

  • I have a few .eu domains, mainly because I didn't want .com and at the time .uk (without the .co or .org) wasn't possible. But I now have .uk versions for all so fu eu.
