Dawn Butler MP – No LGBT Rights After Brexit

In another daily dose of project fear and hysteria regarding leaving the EU in 3 weeks time, Dawn Butler MP claimed last night that LGBT+ rights will be diminished once we leave the EU.

The event with Dawn Butler, Ben Bradshaw, Hannah Bardell and Jonathan Cooper was held in Parliament by “LGBT 4 PV” (LGBT for Peoples Vote).

The group, which seems to have been sponsored by news outlet GayStarNews is planning a march 6 days before we leave the EU across London.

The group claim:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]None of us voted to make this country worse off, to damage the NHS, or to leave LGBT+ people vulnerable if a future government is homophobic or transphobic.[/perfectpullquote]

Now, last time i checked it was successive Labour and Conservative British Parliaments that succeeded in bringing both Women and LGBT rights to the country. Such as The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 and Representation of the People Act 1918 – which gave women the vote. These rights have nothing to do with the EU. In fact, even after Brexit the UK will remain a member of the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) designed to protect these freedoms.

The group also claim that:
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]This is why a majority of the LGBT+ community, 72%, already support a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.
[/perfectpullquote]

They don’t provide sources, but im assuming (possibly wrongly) that the poll was conducted by GayStarNews.

  • Presumably the multi-coloured plethora of minority interest pressure groups would rather have the democratic right for the majority to take no notice of them (not even actively discriminate against them) removed than consider why the majority might want this (i.e. they are sick of their incessant bleating).
