  • it would be rather interesting to see the same graph for individual countries. I suspect that it would show the same hockey-stick shape - only the blade would start to rise at different dates. My guesses would be:

    India - around 1780-1800, when it was colonised by the British
    Africa - around 1850, when it was colonised by the British and French
    Australia - around 1790, when it was colonised by the British
    Japan - around 1850, when the Americans arrived
    China - around 1950, when they started to copy the West
    USSR - around 1950, when they started to copy the West

    ....
