Nutters Should Have The Bennies – Criminals Not

It’s difficult to work out what the actual complaint here is:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Killers, kidnappers and other violent offenders are claiming thousands of pounds in state benefits if they are held in secure hospitals rather than prisons, The Telegraph can disclose. Ministry of Justice figures show 2,978 offenders classed as potentially dangerous are eligible for benefits after being ordered by the courts to receive treatment in a secure psychiatric hospital for an “indefinite” period. Hundreds are known to be claiming taxpayer support. MPs and campaigners for victims are demanding the practice be stopped. The offenders are generally deemed by a court to have committed serious crimes but, due to their mental disorder, they have not been given prison sentences and are treated. [/perfectpullquote]

If they’re nuts then they get treated like any other ill person. Left to those tender mercies of the welfare state and the NHS. If they’re not nutters, if they are in fact criminals, then we bang them up and they don’t get the welfare payments.

So, what is it that is being complained about? That nutters get benefits?

  • When no private company would do it without access to an unlimited pile of government money, that's when I knew. When nobody supported it except for a bunch of middle-aged trainspotters, that is when I was sure.

  • what is it that is being complained about? That nutters get benefits?

You mean apart from being put in the Lords?

  • They're demanding that ill people who be made destitute? How far will this go? Certain political views be deemed an "illness"? When will traffic offences result in compulsary organ donation?
