Scandal, Furore, As Drake Hugs Girl It’s Legal To Hug

It’s an oddity of modern society that as sexual liberation proceeds we seem to be becoming more sexually censorious – as with this furore over Drake being videoed hugging a girl it’s entirely legal to hug. Actually, a girl it was entirely legal in that time and place, to have full on sex with. Perhaps the Baptists have been right all along, they’re against sex because they think dancing might break out?

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Video has surfaced of Drake kissing a 17-year-old girl in Denver, Colorado in May 2010. In the clip, the Canadian rapper invites the girl on stage during his performance at the Ogden Theater, dances with her, kisses her neck, comments on her shampoo, then pulls her shirt down at the back of the neck to kiss her again. After reaching both hands across her chest while standing behind her, he picks up the microphone and says he is getting “carried away”. When asked her age, the unnamed girl replies: “17.” Drake responds: “I can’t go to jail yet, man!” [/perfectpullquote]

The incident itself:

As The Guardian itself notes the age of consent in Colorado is 17. So jail time wasn’t about to be what happened anyway.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]It is the second time Drake has faced criticism in recent days.[/perfectpullquote]

But why the criticism? She is, by law and current social insistence, a grown woman entirely able to make her own decisions about sex. If she has complained or wishes to complain then fine. But for everyone else to criticise? Why?

  • Note that Drake (32 now) was 24 at the time. I suspect canoodling between a 24yo man and a 17yo girl may have gone on before - even in America, where the 'accidental' exposure of a nipple can arouse national conniptions.

  • Because young attractive women are incapable of making decisions for themselves and must be protected against having fun by older (or just aged before their times) unattractive womyn or “old women” (aka blerks)?
