A Question About Berkeley’s Gender Neutral Language Ordnance

Well, OK, and why not? This is the city council defining the words that the city council will use. Shrug. Keeps them away from doing the more damaging things they more normally get up to of course:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — There will be no manholes in Berkeley, California. City workers will drop into “maintenance holes” instead. Nothing will be manmade in the liberal city but “human-made.” And students at the University of California, Berkeley, will join “collegiate Greek system residences” rather than fraternities and sororities. Berkeley leaders voted unanimously this week to replace about 40 gender-specific words in the city code with gender-neutral terms — an effort to be more inclusive that’s drawing both praise and scorn. [/perfectpullquote]

A question though. Those collegiate residences are still male and female aren’t they? We’ve not got to the point of mixed dormitories in the Greek system yet? So, we need to be able to distinguish between “male collegiate Greek system residences” and “female collegiate Greek system residences” and might I suggest that we’ve a couple of candidate words for those two mouthfuls? Fraternities and sororities perhaps?

For no one will get their minds around the idea of adelphoses and adelphisis.

  • In a bell curve distribution, 50% will always be below the middle point. Why is it though these fuckwits are always in some form of government?

  • My current hobby horse is getting our standing orders changed so all town councillors are Cllr Surname, not if(sex=female) {Cllr $title Surname} else {Cllr Surname}
