Morrisons Hasn’t Banned Vegan Pies in Melton Mowbray, Don’t Be Silly

They might say they have, banned their new vegan pork pie in the town of Melton Mowbray out of concern for the locally famed pork based product. But that’s just a manner of gaining some column inches for free in the national press about the fact that they’re launching a vegan pork pie.

Quite a good piece of work too:

Morrisons has banned the sale of its new vegan pork pies in Melton Mowbray the home of the traditional British snack to ‘avoid offending residents of the town’.

A leaked internal memo revealed the supermarket giant’s decision to not sell the ‘no pork pies’ at the Leicestershire store, ahead of the launch of the product on Monday.

The notice warned the range would not be stocked in Melton Mowbray, where the snack first became popular in the mid 18th Century, in order to ‘avoid offence’.

It also advised staff to direct customers asking for the meat-free pork pies to customer services who will arrange a home delivery.

The next stage in the process is that they’ll report certain Melton Mowbreans as not being offended by a vegan piece, then the third iteration of the story – reported, again – will be Morrisons gracefully giving in to the demands of the adoring crowd that the vegan pork pie be sold in Melton Mowbray.

Three national coverages of the vegan pork pie launch for the cost of a few press releases? Good work there, well done that man.

  • What's the matter with pork pies these days? Soggy pastry, Dry spicy meat, and where's the jelly?
It might almost be worthwhile trying theose vegan pies. I never thought I would ever say that.

    • Dunno, but wouldn’t be surprised if they’re playing the health fascists’ game and trying to keep the calorie count down.

    • Are you buying them from supermarkets? Our local butcher (not in Melton Mowbray) produces excellent pork pies.

  • It does rather leave them open to requests to ban the pork versions in certain towns, to avoid offending the residents.
