Or, according to Michel Barnier, it isn’t chlorine washed chicken time again. For the insistence is that we’ll not use, post-Brexit, such processes. Or, as some are thinking it might be, that we’ll not consume products using such processes.
This being an important difference here:
The EU will demand the UK maintains a ban on chlorinated chicken as the price for a trade agreement with Brussels, in a move that protects European meat exports and creates an obstacle to a deal with Donald Trump.
On the recommendation of France, a clause has been inserted into the EU’s negotiating mandate to insist that both sides maintain “health and product sanitary quality in the food and agriculture sector”, according to a copy leaked to the Guardian.
The paragraph, in a newly entitled section of the document for the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, called “Environment and health” provides a catch-all insurance for the EU that certain methods of food production – particular pesticides, endocrine disrupters or chlorine washes for poultry – will not be used in the UK.
Well, which is it?
Is it that we’ll not use such processes? Maybe that’s a good idea, maybe it’s not, up to you for your opinions on such things.
But there’s the other way to read it. That we’ll not allow into the country things that have been produced in such a manner. Which does rather put the kibosh on any US trade deal – or at least aspects of one.
That we don’t use such is one thing, that we don’t consume such another.
The language we use matters - it provides clarity to our own thoughts and enables…

Also none of the EU's business what we do here - unless it is for export to the EU.
We should have realised by now that the EU bans stuff to protect its favoured constituencies. There is nothing we can or could do about that.
So we regulate to suit ourselves and leave them to suit themselves.
Otherwise we remain tied to their sclerotic protectionist racket.
What exactly is the EU approved method of preparing poultry carcasses to reduce bacterial contamination? I have tried to find it on the web, but all that ever comes up is chlorine washed chicken.
I did find a link to a Guardian article covering poor practice in a UK processing plant, and the only bactericidal measure seems to be a scald bath which kills bacteria and makes feathers stand up to make it easier for the plucking machine to pluck.
The article points out a scum forms on the surface of the bath where water is cooler and can promote bacterial growth and contaminate carcasses as they emerge, which puts bacteria on the feathers, contaminating the plucking machine and the denuded carcass. Good eh?
Let's hope our government makes the options clear.
1. A comprehensive free trade deal that benefits all EU citizens a fair bit.
2. A less than comprehensive trade deal that benefits EU citizens less than Option 1.

The trouble is that the Commissars who will make such decisions have absolutely no reason to consider the prosperity of people living in the EU. On the other hand, they have very strong reasons to consider the future longevity of the EU as an organisation. Which is the main reason for leaving.
