Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the people making this claim also routinely tell us the government can spend freely regardless of how much it collects? Deficits don't matter, never have to be repaid, just shake the Magic Money Tree, etc.

Agreed, but which are these governments that know better how to spend it? The Saudis frog zample are good at buying Rollers and Knightsbridge properties, but their spending record on champers and vodka is spotty to say the least.
