It’s almost as if Owen Jones is suffering from otherfootitis, the inability to open mouth other than to change feet. He’s, obviously enough, outraged by the coverage of the Christchurch shootings. Those who must carry part of the blame being those who write the British papers.

An horrific event like the mass-shooting by a far-right terrorist in New Zealand yesterday should, as I said, give us pause for thought. We have to evaluate the toxic effect Identity Politics is having on our societies. A prime example is the effort Owen Jones made yesterday to make the terrible news an occasion to castigate the British media for subliminal racism. Jones’s theory is that the way the tabloid press portrayed the deranged killer in New Zealand, who is white, was qualitatively different to the way they portray non-white killers. Yes, well. But then Owen Jones and reality have never had that close a relationship, have they?
