Claims And Truth About Trump’s America And Trans Asylum Seekers

It must be difficult to be so outraged at Trump’s America that you’re unable to keep the accusations straight. I mean sure, Trump’s America – Orange Man Bad, we all know that.

But take this on the subject on the treatment of trans asylum seekers. Carrie Bradshaw tells us that they’re jailed merely on the basis of their sexuality:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]This is the same administration that imprisons immigrants on the basis of their sexual orientation[/perfectpullquote]

In terms of immigration they’re not even allowed to ask about sexuality. It’s a protected characteristic. Now, there is an issue with trans but that’s with asylum seekers. If you try to claim asylum then there has to be a reason to claim asylum. Asylum being a particular legal state which needs a reason for it to be claimable. That the gangs are after me, the political class will judicially murder me, I’m gay or trans and the society I come from will do away with me if I have to stay there. Those are all reasonable grounds to claim asylum. Iran really does hang gay people, being gay and from Iran is a reasonable and accepted ground for asylum.

Being trans and an asylum seeker in the US doesn’t get you jailed. Well, no more than any asylum seeker is invited to remain in custody while that asylum claim is considered. Quite the opposite in fact:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]A transgender asylum seeker has died just days after being released from a U.S. immigration detention center where advocates say detainees are mistreated.[/perfectpullquote]

Well, why was the transgender asylum seeker released from custody? Because being transgender – allied with the justified fear of persecution in the home country – was accepted as being a legitimate ground for claiming asylum. That is, far from being trans a cause for being jailed, it’s a reason to be let out of jail. No longer is that trans person a would be illegal immigrant to be kept until deported, rather, someone on the first stages of being accepted as a legal asylum seeker.

Which is, of course, 180 degrees different from the original claim, isn’t it? And guess what? It’s the same Carrie Bradshaw who points us at the second story to show how evilly Trump’s America treats trans immigrants.

I dunno, is it too much to expect at least consistency in the complaints?

  • Surely these people would be crying out demanding a scientific test for sexuality, not demanding that anybody suggesting it is expelled from polite society. At the moment all we have to go one is an individual's assertion. "I am gay, honest guv" - prove it! If there was something like a blood test "yep, you're gay", "yep, your brain doesn't match your genitals" it would solve almost all these proplems.
