Ed Davey – known as he is as such a good reader of the political wind – has just reminded us why there’s been that populist surge in recent years. Because what the people wanted to talk about, what the people wanted the politicians to deal with, isn’t what the establishment of politicians cared to concern themselves with. Often enough, that establishment directly acting against the wishes of that populace.
Thus the irruption of elections at which the populists win, the establishment doesn’t. You know, that outbreak of democracy?
At which point we get Ed Davey insisting that the old establishment must cabal together against the people:

Should be interesting if tried.
So we get a cabinet which is half Labour and half Tory. That'll work well! A lot of Labour MPs will see their Cabinet members as supping with the enemy, and a lot of Tory MPs likewise. Such a combination would likely be the largest party, but may well fall short of an overall majority.
And when the next GE comes along neither Tory nor Labour can convincingly campaign on fear of the other.
As a means of maintaining the status quo for up to three years it might work but probably won't. But it guarantees the end of the status quo three years hence.
Ed Davey is a LibDem.
