The Logical Contortions Of The Woken SS

Clearly and obviously it’s impossible to believe everything the Woken SS tells us must be believed without using a certain amount of heavily tortured logic. It’s still wondrous to see the twists in some of that being used though.

For example, if we ever step off the reservation – as that word just shows I have – of acceptable language then we will, or should be perhaps, shamed as a result of our doing so. Using people of color instead of colored to refer to higher melanin inheritances will equally lead to screaming harpies shouting that we should be shamed, shamed.

But if you’re fat enough to be a danger to shipping when wet the mere idea of muttering about healthy BMIs is in itself harmful:

She is implicitly stating that Lizzo needs to change her body through weight loss, based on assumptions about Lizzo’s lifestyle and health, and is stigmatizing fat bodies in the process. Weight stigma is known to have negative health effects while also encouraging less healthy behaviors, which calls into question the wisdom of deploying it as a tactic to improve anyone’s health.

The stigma is harmful. Which, presumably, means that we should not stigmatise those with the wrong ideas about race, gender or, even, weight. Because to stigmatise is harmful to those being stigma’d.

That is, if this fatuity about not being mean to lardbuckets is true then Twitter is bankrupt.

Which isn’t, of course, what the earnest young idiot at Vox.com means to say but logically must follow from what they have.

Of course, looking at 50 years of maturity in the rear view mirror always does mean the young are incomprehensible, it’s just that with this lot it’s their fault not the maturity’s.

  • I smile when you write about this. I was one of these lard buckets of whom you speak. Everyone was too polite to comment until a good friend asked “did you enjoy Christmas?” and when I said yes said “Good, because you won’t see another one unless you address your weight issue”. Was I bothered? No. It was good data from a trusted source and I thought about it. I took medical and dietary advice, started an exercise programme and lost 50 kg in a year. It wasn’t a micro aggression. It was friendship and I am grateful for it. Freud is a close second to Marx in the “worst enemies of mankind” stakes if you ask me. People need to look up from their navels and get real. Their feelings don’t matter nearly as much as they think — or to as many other people! Truth is good stuff per se and if your ideology is telling you to lie or be lied to — question it.

    • It's possible that Freud was well-intentioned and not simply a charlatan. But if you build your theories based on years of talking to nutters, you end up with nutty theories. None of Freud's theories stand up to any kind of analysis (sorry), and none of his 'cures' are better than a placebo.

      • I guess it’s even possible that Marx was too. Sometimes our worst enemies mean well in their warped way. On the other hand, as Freud observed in another context, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”.

    • Is your friend available to come and have a word with my wife. Because I don't want to risk telling her.
Seriously well done on losing those kilos - I've lost 10kg in a year and the spare skin starts to tickle at random times. It's really tempting to fill back up, but in a holding pattern for now and much better for it.
But your main point is a bit like the old saying "one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist" . One man's stigmatisation to another man is friendly advice.

      • I injured my good knee over Christmas and was laid up in bed for a week taking painkillers and anti-inflamarorites - the second worst thing for weight control, I put on half a stone, but I was desparate to get my knees working again as the worst thing is not walking at all.

The next worst is my "helpful" neighbour coming around "oh, I've just cooked too much of this super-high-calorie deliciousness, it will go off in a day, I thought you would like some of it".
