Gove’s Rapid Response Unit On Brexit

This should be easy enough, Michael Gove is setting up a rapid response unit to counter the lies and falsehoods being spread about a no deal Brexit:

Michael Gove will launch a new ‘rapid rebuttal unit’ at the heart of Government on Monday to provide instant responses to “media myths and half-truths” about the risks of a no-deal Brexit. The new Response Unit will be run by civil servants in the Cabinet Office and will ensure that “the public and businesses are not being alarmed by scare stories or falsehoods “, The Sunday Telegraph can disclose.

Grandstanding Judge – Coke User “Should Not Be Punished More Than Michael Gove”

Sure, and isn’t this a lovely little story. A judge has declined to jail a man convicted of Class A drugs possession on the grounds that he shouldn’t be punished more than Michael Gove was for the same offence.

All of which is really just an example of the increasing idiocy of our modern public life. We used to do one particular thing, which was select our judges from the brightest. We tried really rather hard not to allow stupid people to become barristers, then we only selected our judges from among the bright ones of those.…

University Expansion Wasn’t A Good Idea – Michael Gove VAT And Sales Tax Edition

Sticking 50% of the age cohort through grievance studies for three years doesn’t particularly aid the future. But rather more than that we have evidence that there’re not sufficient people competent to teach to staff the upgraded places.

Let us take as our example this analysis of Michael Gove’s idea to scrap VAT and replace it with a sales tax:

Value added tax is an idea embraced by more than 150 countries around the world.

Gove’s Brexit Plan – 2020 Means All The Pain, None Of The Gain

Leave aside for the moment who you’d like to see as next PM. Leave aside as well who you think would make a good PM. Meaning that we can put aside Boris’ ability to do detail, Gove’s to rally the troops and all that. Think for a moment solely about Brexit policy, the existential question being faced currently. Gove’s idea of waiting until – or up until if necessary – late 2020 to gain a deal is taking all of the pain and getting none of the gain.…

Gove’s Plan For Post-Brexit 200 Mile Fishing Grounds Is Just Standard International Law

Michael Gove is announcing that post-Brexit the UK will have a 200 mile fishing limit, within which the fish are British. And it gets to be Britain who decides who can fish them. This is not odd nor unusual – it’s that we don’t currently claim such rights which is. For Gove is just restating standard international law here:

Britain will ‘own’ the sea and the fish in it up to 200 miles from the coast for the first time in decades after the UK leaves the European Union, under plans set out today.
