Emma Thompson’s Flying Answer – If I Could Fly Cleanly I Would

Dame Emma Thompson has told us why it is that she flew into London from Los Angeles to take part in a demonstration against climate change caused by people flying around and making CO2 emissions. “If I could fly cleanly then I would”.

Well, yes Honey. That’s our entire problem with climate change in the first place. We value the things we do – all these things that make up civilisation – as we also value the idea of an environment that we can continue to live in. These two are in conflict. Therefore we’re not going to have no climate change for to do so means no civilisation.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Actress Dame Emma Thompson has been defending her decision to fly from the US to attend a climate change protest in central London. Speaking to reporters from the Extinction Rebellion campaign group’s pink boat, she said did not fly as much as she used to – and planted a lot of trees. Ms Thompson also compared the protest to the campaign of disruption by the Suffragettes. [/perfectpullquote]

Or, speaking her own lines here she is:

All of the same is true of everything else we humans do. Eating beef means methane emissions. Many of us like eating beef and thus there will be methane emissions. Many – given the number who buy such, many many – like cheap clothing. That does indeed mean emissions along the production pathway. So, there will be emissions because people like cheap clothing.

Of course, there is the other defence available:

Difficult one to maintain no doubt but it’s tried often enough.

  • No extra methane is produced by eating beef. Any actual methane emissions (which will inevitably come from the decomposing grass the cows didn't eat) will soon become CO2 and water in the atmosphere. The claim of damage is bolx. It doesn't take much checking to find out.

However, if the lasting point is that Emma Thompson is a hypocritical poseur, that much is true.

  • But the suffragettes and suffragists disrupted the lives of the decision-makers, not the lives of the helpless bystanders. The ecoprotestors should be glueing their bollocks to the House of Commons viewing gallery, not the Docklands Light Railway.
