British Universities, State Schools And The Lake Wobegon Effect

Shocking figures out today from the Higher Education Statistical Authority today as we’re told that half of British universities are letting in more of those poor dullards from state schools. Quite why they’ve taken it upon themselves to pollute the learning environment by importing more of those children too stupid to be born into the right families is…..

Ah, no, that’s not it is it? Rather, half of British universities are managing to overcome the tenor and fashion of the times to not allow more chavs into hallowed halls of learning…

George Monbiot’s Advice – Ignore The State And Its Regulations, She’ll Be Right

We thought this was interesting as an injunction about how to make the world work better. Simply ignore the State, its regulations, the clipboard wielders and she’ll be right, the world will be a better place.

He’s talking about how the people are doing it for themselves, that Burkean idea that the little platoons organise and manage society better than any central office can. Not that he realises this of course, for to do so would be to say that the conservatives, the free marketeers, have a point.…

Labour Insists The University Admissions System Is Staffed By The Ignorant

There could be a certain amount of truth to this contention, that the British university system is staffed by the ignorant. We think particularly of Bath Spa University which has been offering £750 sign ups to new students – commit to the government paying £27,000 in fees, you paying that back in dribs and drabs, and we’ll give you £750 in cash now.

Hmm, actually, that’s a very decent gaming of the system, not a sign of ignorance at all.…
