The Little Known Cream Song Fronted By A Bond Girl – Caroline Munro

This isn’t quite as outrageous as it sounds to be honest, given the times and the line of work. But Caroline Munro, who went on to be one of the Bond girls, once did a single where her backing band was, essentially, Cream. Yep, Ginger Baker, Jack Brice, Eric Clapton, bubble gum pop by a 16 year old.

I’d not known about it until The G mentioned it this morning:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]In 1967, Munro, who had sung in her church choir, released her first single, a breathy ditty called Tar and Cement, recorded at Abbey Road. Her backing band was Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, better known as Cream, alongside the future Yes guitarist Steve Howe.[/perfectpullquote]

No, really, and here it is:

The reason it’s not as unlikely as you might think is that certainly Bruce and Baker were, at the time, known as session musicians. ’67’s a little late for them to still be doing sessions but why not, eh?

I never knew she’d made a record. I do remember her as the Lamb’s Navy Rum girl. A couple of things stand out.

Most pop songs of that era were made using a very few backing musicians. A couple of years later it might have been Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones.
