That one of the websites which came up with, popularised, the pussy hat doesn’t like Donald Trump should be obvious. That Ravelry has gone on to ban any mention of support for Trump from its forums might seem a little more extreme. The reason given is not the usual Orange Man Bad either. It’s that support for Trump is objectively white supremacy. Which is probably reading a little more – or less if you prefer – into his political stances than is actually merited.…See More
Isn’t this just such a lovely example of today’s liberal public settlement? If you are guilty of wrongthink then you’re banned from using the usual societal tools. Even, banned from using the tools which many use to establish, in the courts and the law, their rights.
Sure and of course any private business can deny the custom of anyone they like. But that such are being banned on such nakedly political grounds might give us all a little pause for thought.…See More
An interesting little thought experiment here – is Facebook actually banning people for being dangerous or for being unfashionable among the bien pensants? For what Facebook has done is state that anyone they regard as being white supremacist is to be banned from the platform. Sure, of course, they’re a private organisation, they can ban anyone they like for any reason.
Actually, well, no, they can’t, they’d be grossly guilty of gross discrimination under the law if they banned people on the basis of their race, gender, sexuality and whatever else is a protected characteristic these days.…See More
China is considering a ban on bitcoin mining within the country. Quite how they’ll ban anyone connecting up a mining rig is, well, that’s for them to work out. The thing is, they would, wouldn’t they? For two entirely different reasons – and then there’s the third they actually mention. Bitcoin has been used as a rat run out of yuan, which isn’t going to please the government as they’ve been trying to keep that value nice and high.…See More
Well, thank God we’re leaving at some point in some as yet to be determined manner for the European Union has just done another silly thing – banned single use plastics. There’s the point itself, which is that single use plastics are, often enough but not always, the least resource hungry ways of doing something. That is, we save resources by using them instead of paper, or cotton, or whatever. The second and more important thing is the underlying point.…See More
San Francisco is indulging in another bout of virtue signalling. There’s really very little point at all in an area so small trying to ban the sale of something. America is, after all, the land of the car. Actually San Francisco’s so small you can walk out of it in under an hour. So, a ban on the local sale of e-cigarettes like Juul is not in fact going to do anything very much. Except, of course, virtue signal and also make that store you and I are going to open in Daly City massively profitable.…See More
This is not a new finding, that banning single use plastic bags can actually lead to more use of plastic to make bags from. It was actually predicted some time back before anyone started to impose those bans on single use plastic bags in fact. And we’ve also found that plastics use has been rising in certain places with such bans – because of the bans. This is a good piece giving the numbers and background.…See More
Public Health England, PHE, has decided that McDonald’s Big Mac should no longer be legally available in England. At least, that’s the implication of their latest little foray into public policy making. At which point this is all going to get interesting, isn’t it? For while the prodnoses burble among themselves the rest of us get on with living life as we wish. But at some point their whinges start to impact upon what we ourselves can do in our own lives.…See More
The National Health Service has been told that it cannot buy any more fax machines and really must get with the programme by upgrading to email and the like. The problem with this is that it’s simply more of what most ails the National HS which is centralised control and dictat. This is, of course, inevitable in a National HS which is run by politicians. Command and control becomes the default option, something unfortunate as command and control isn’t the way to run large organisations.…See More
This is a strange denial of freedom, the Federal Drug Administration is to seek to ban all menthol cigarettes. We could even describe this as distinctly racist – for there’s a certain racial divide in who enjoys menthol flavoured cigarettes and this will have a disproportionate effect upon the melanin enriched. A very odd thing to be doing in this day and age:
