That when you call a cat it simply doesn’t arrive, when you call a dog it does, is entirely true. This could be because cats are deaf, because they’re stupid even. In fact, it turns out that they just don’t care. You and your desires aren’t enough to get it to move. And yes, we do think that it knows its name, that it recognises being called. That it doesn’t then come is a result of its disdain, nothing else:

Cats are fascinatingly, but decidedly, odd creatures. I had one that wouldn’t respond to its name – just giving me an imperious “who do you think you are, trying to summon my presence?” look, but would come running from the back of the garden to me sitting in the lounge if I opened a packet of cheesy Wotsits when the patio doors were open. Had to be Wotsits, though – other crunchy comestibles were ignored. Another cat I had would also not respond to her name, but would come running from a distance if I rubbed my index finger and… Read more »
“I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals. ”
Winston Churchill
Dogs think: “These people feed me, provide for me, give me shelter, and love me. They must be God!”
Cats think: “These people feed me, provide for me, give me shelter and love me. I must be God!”
