Banco Santander Credit Card Computers Hacked

Just a little warning for people out there. The Banco Santander credit card computers and servers have been hacked.

[/perfectpullquote]

Or, in English:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] On the Alert tracking relative movement suspicion made with your card we tried to contact him without success. As a matter of safety that the card has been canceled for fraud. For further information on the card canceled and movements that originated its cancellation, you can contact Superline for the number ….. or alternatively, move your counter. [/perfectpullquote]

Checking this, it’s a real hack of the main systems for that credit card service. Cards are being cancelled wholesale and will be replaced. Analysis of the specific account shows that no fraudulent charges have made it through so far.

The big question is whether this applies only to Portuguese accounts. So, anyone who has a Santander credit card in other parts of the world, please let us know. Not because we’re going to do anything about it but just so that we all know.

And there are going to be some number of people seriously pissed off that they don’t have a credit card for the week or 10 days that it takes the replacement to come through.

I imagine very few people (in the developed world) have only one credit card. Mind you, the way things are going you could have half-a-dozen and they’d all turn out to be with Santander. I always keep a separate one at home, or in the hotel safe, just in case.

7 to 10 days to get a replacement credit card? You’re working with the wrong place. I had to cancel my credit card due to fraud and Costco had a replacement there the next morning.

Breaking the habit of a lifetime, last week I applied for and got a Barclaycard. About a day later i recieved a letter and email sayinf there were problems in the processing and the card issued to me had been cancelled, and another one would be sent later. Coincidence?
When I got the card I tried to register it online, but the registration failed, so something’s gone wrong. I need to find some time during office hours to be left on hold on their phone system.

When the hysteria subsides, say 6 months, please do a follow-up on the number of live humans who have been damaged by this “hack”. Disregard the inconveniences caused by the cancellations, reissues, etc.. Thanks.
