Capitalism Is Just So Intensely Feminist

If we think over the problems that the wealth and income of capitalism have solved for us we’d have to conclude that it’s the most feminist socioeconomic system ever. It wasn’t the state that invented nor popularised the vacuum cleaner, microwave, disposable nappy nor washing machine. I’ve actually owned a Soviet washing machine and it was hardly a machine and didn’t wash*. It is all of this that has led to the economic liberation of women to all our benefits. Brought to you, obviously, by that capitalism.

Matters still move on. It’s capitalism that’s bringing us another victory over female biology:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] A medical procedure that aims to allow women to delay the menopause for up to 20 years has been launched by IVF specialists in Britain. Doctors claim the operation could benefit thousands of women who experience serious health problems, such as heart conditions and bone-weakening osteoporosis, that are brought on by the menopause. [/perfectpullquote] [perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] But the specialists believe the same procedure could also improve the lives of millions more women by delaying the onset of more common symptoms of the menopause, which range from low mood, anxiety and difficulty sleeping, to hot flushes, night sweats and a reduced sex drive. The procedure, which costs between £7,000 and £11,000, is being offered to women up to the age of 40 through ProFam, a Birmingham-based company set up by Simon Fishel, an IVF doctor and president of the UK Care Fertility Group, in collaboration with other specialists. Note that it’s not the NHS offering this. It’s capitalism red in tooth and claw. We want your cash so here’s something you might want sufficiently to hand it over to us.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Menopause will no longer be a barrier for women building their careers, a scientist has claimed, following a research breakthrough which will allow for older women to have children. The revolutionary procedure, which is being offered by the fertility expert who pioneered IVF, works by tricking women’s biological clocks into thinking they are far younger than they are. [/perfectpullquote] [perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]The surgery freezes ovarian tissue at -150C. It is then stored in an ice bank until women reach the menopause when it is then thawed and transplanted back into the body years later when it will then kickstart women’s natural hormones and delay the menopause.[/perfectpullquote]

Truly, the benefits of capitalism to women are many and varied. Even the little blue pills are feminist – women enjoy the results too, right?

*An oddity really, as a washing machine is steel, cement and ball bearings. Commies had lots and lots of the first two, as they used to boast, and the third they usually had an entire bloody ministry for the things.

Women enjoy the benefits of the little blue pills? I’m not so sure.
My great-grandmother was of the generation being educated that sex *was* enjoyable, and it *was* ok to like enjoying sex, that it wasn’t an encumberance to be endured for other purposes.

Now we seem to have generations of women going back to believing that sex is something to be endured rather than enjoyed. It’s as though breathing or having vitamins in your diet is something to be endured.
